Percussionist Mor Thiam's son, Akon was raised in a family dedicated to music and learned to play several instruments including the djembe. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, so we had no immigration problem, but lived in Dakar, Senegal, to seven years old. Notably, his family was Muslim, but he did not follow Islam. For a while it was between the U.S. and Senegal, Akon finally settled down in the North American country at 15 years old, when he settled in Jersey City, New Jersey.5

He also met the crime of the streets and went on a couple of occasions to jail. Akon used that time to channel their musical knowledge and insights. Upon his release, he made some models that, thanks to the efforts of his manager Devyne Stephens, found a way to the offices of Universal. Thus was conceived their debut, 'Trouble', appeared in 2004. It was the hit "Locked Up", directly inspired by his time behind bars and 'Ghetto', 'Bananza' or 'Lonely', all songs that was brewing in the peculiar style that fuses rap Akon streets with elegant melodies of soul, production for the club and African rhythms. The album went multi-platinum and eventually sold over 3 million copies worldwide.

'Ghetto' was later remixed for radio, including reconocidísimos verses by rappers 2Pac, The Notorious BIG and Moroccan artists based in Holland as Yesser Rochdi, better known as Ali YES-R and B. And, thanks to the popularity gained, made a guest appearance on 'Soul Survivor', with Young Jeezy. Other collaborations have been co-stars to R. Kelly, Obie Trice, Elton John, Daddy Yankee and Gwen Stefani, with whom he has composed a theme in his latest album, 'The Sweet Escape' (Interscope, 2006). In addition, there has been time to create his own label (Konvict Muzik), where T-Pain publishes and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas.
